Why is the rainforest lichen Methuselah’s beard (<i>Usnea longissima</i>) so rare in British Columbia’s inland temperate rainforest?

چکیده

Coastal (CTR) and inland temperate rainforests (ITR) in western North America share a rich oceanic lichen flora. The distinctive Methuselah’s beard (Usnea longissima Ach.) is an exception to this pattern of shared distributions, with very few ITR locations. Does absence reflect dispersal limitations or climatic intolerance? To answer question, we transplanted U. thalli from the CTR three locations, assessing growth rates against reciprocal transplants. Canopy microclimate measurements provided concurrent data on conditions. Growth rate responses (length, mass, area) were evaluated after summer full-year Notwithstanding extended drought conditions during period, annual transplants at two locations supported comparable those source population, dewfall autumn rains being major hydration sources. Thalli third site (summer only) location transitional drier interior plateau lost both mass length. Based these findings, suggest that much reflects combined influence requirements for stands long continuity topographically induced wetting by dewfall.

The Northern Inland Temperate Rainforest of British Columbia: Old Forests With a Young History?

The inland temperate rainforest (ITR) in east-central British Columbia is marked by superlative examples of old-growth cedarhemlock forest. How long has this old-growth forest structure been a major component of this landscape? What is the biological and conservation significance of the history of this forest type? Here we present paleoecological evidence from a study in the Robson Valley of th...

The dynamics of rainfall interception by a seasonal temperate rainforest

Net canopy interception (Inet) during rainfall in an old-growth Douglas-fir–western hemlock ecosystem was 22.8 and 25.0% of the gross rainfall (PG) for 1999 and 2000, respectively. The average direct throughfall proportion (p) and canopy storage capacity (S) derived from high-temporal resolution throughfall measurements were 0.36 and 3.3 mm, respectively. Derived values of S were very sensitive...

Podocarps in Africa: Temperate Zone Relicts or Rainforest Survivors?

Podocarp distribution in Africa follows a discontinuous mountainous belt from Cameroon to Angola in the west and from Ethiopia in the northeast to the southern Cape in South Africa. Besides a relict population of Afrocarpus falcatus in coastal lowland forest in northeastern South Africa and southern Mozambique, African podocarps are generally limited to highland (Afrotemperate) regions. All pod...
